Shin Splints
This is a common term used for discomfort in your “shin muscles”, mainly the anterior or posterior tibialis. This is usually caused due to overuse of the affected muscle. This overuse can be due to repetitive movements that focus on the affected muscle. If your discomfort comes with exercise, it could be due to excessive pronation, i.e. “flat feet” or collapsing arches. Overpronation causes both the above mentioned shin muscles to be stretched beyond their normal allowance. The soreness felt is often painful and can resemble a burning sensation.

Treatments:
Orthotics are a common form of treatment for shin splints, as long as the cause is overuse due to arch collapse. This is something easily assessed by your pedorthist, physiotherapist, or family physician. The orthotics can provide support to the arch and ultimately prevent the collapse from occurring, thus taking the stress off the shin muscles. Increased shock absorption with your footwear and/or orthotics is also useful to help with the soreness.
